Select juicers are 40% off ending tonight at Macy's! If you see one you like and then order online, you can either pick up in store or get free shipping on any orders over 99 dollars.

That Omega masticating juicer with $172 off is awfully tempting.

Travel Blog Part 2

Hi Everyone.
I'm back from a quick weekend trip to New York. This is not my first visit to the Big Juicy Apple but I still get excited getting off the plane and inhaling the cab exhaust. Each trip is different because you never know what you'll see.
The amazing people watching, grand architecture, and endless food and entertainment keep drawing me back. Well that and my day job!
I had to, of course, check out at least one of the fantastic juice bars in New York City. We had a jam packed schedule so the closest location in the morning was Juice Press in Midtown, though it looks like they have almost 20 locations across the city. They have over 30 raw cold pressed juice varieties in addition to juice blends, green smoothies, and a salad bar. You can also taste test some of them before you buy, which is a great idea since they can get a little pricey, though it's easier than traveling with a juicer.
I tried one of the juice blends containing strawberries almond milk, coconut extract, vanilla, and sampled the Mother Earth green juice. There's a little something for everyone at Juice Press, though the 'Mother F'in Fireball' juice may not exactly be your cup of tea. Again, try the samples!
Their website is also a hoot. Check out their FAQ for answers on juicing , why the sky is blue, and various gastrointestinal ponderings related to juicing.

First stop,
Brooklyn!

Hi Juicers!  Just a quick post from the road.  I'm on a weekend/work trip to NYC right now.  I spent Thursday and Friday here in Brooklyn seeing a few of the sights, taking in all the yummy food smells (and a few other smells too!), and feeling the winter storm blowing. But what does a juice junkie do in the land of bagels and meatball marinara?
And hot dogs... did I mention the hot dogs??

After my day job was over, I set out to Brooklyn Heights and the Promenade.  If you've ever seen the movie Moonstruck then you've seen the Promenade. It stretches all the way to the Brooklyn Bridge. When it isn't snowing you can see the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline.

Among the many bagel shops and Italian eateries I wandered upon this bright spot on Montague Street.  An awesome sight being out in the snow.  The inside of the store was even better. Wouldn't you love to shop here?  Inside they also had their own deli, fish market, sandwich counter, sushi, gift baskets... it was amazing.

Tomorrow I'm off to Manhattan and I can't wait to try out some of their raw juice bars!

Caution:     Marathon Juice Session

I like to juice in bulk,  making enough for a few people , or at least me to last a few days.
This means I only have to clean the juicer less often.  Juice will keep for about 3 days, preferably in glass containers that are airtight, and kept super cold of course.

Ingredients: St.Patty's Day Rainbow Monster
(Actual Ingredient Quantities vary from the picture for the sake of making the arrangement pretty )

  • 1 entire stalk - Green Celery
  • 3-4 multi color carrots -  they sell these fantastic varieties at Trader Joes right now, purple and yellow carrots!
  • 4 or 5 sprigs of mint , if you are using a juicer with an auger, or masticating juicer, you'll need less mint.                                 It extracts a lot more of the flavor than the centrifugal (chopping and whirling) juicer.
  • 2 small oranges/cuties
  • 1 handful of strawberries
  • 4 apples - any color
  • 1 head of Romaine
  • 2 large handfuls of any other greens, I recommend using green cabbage, spinach or kale here.

Juice Junkie for Life!

What a day!
I'd been thinking about what my first post for the Junkie Journal should be, and nothing could be more fitting than finally meeting the inspiration for my book!  For those of you new to juicing, Joe Cross is the entrepreneur, filmmaker, author, and soon to be TV personality who created his own documentary about juicing and the amazing effect it has had on his health. It's been life-changing for so many, and meeting him was definitely larger than life.  He is just as friendly and entertaining in person as he is in his movies, and a fantastic and energetic speaker.

One of the best things about Joe is he does not claim to be an expert, guru, nutritionist, or "fruit and vegetable Nazi".  He is only an expert about Joe, and his own experiences.  In his latest movie and books he keeps things very real showing the struggles he and others have had keeping up a healthy lifestyle and maintaining their motivation.

The point he made that I loved the most was not labeling things good or bad, not calling yourself a success or failure based any one of the thousands of decisions we make regarding calories, and sugar,  fat, etc...   Seeing things as only black and white, and getting lost in the minutiae and varying opinions on health and nutrition can make anyone feel lost or intimidated. We need to trust ourselves and how we are feeling and what works for us.  Consider your overall diet, the nutrient content of each food, and make sure you have a balance.

I think this philosophy carries over well into other areas of our lives, especially regarding social media.  The internet is such an easy place to rant, and belittle someone else's opinions or choices.  Hiding behind a keyboard blasting away is not effective or healthy communication, and generally won't make a difference. The more real we can be, the more actual conversations we can have, then the more we can share and learn with those around us.  I hope that this blog can be a positive source of learning and motivation.  Feel free to share your experiences here, both  successes and pitfalls.  Life is often trial and error, so don't compare your outtakes to someone else's highlight reel.
